Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship ProgramNagoya University, Japan

Applications are invited by ADB Administrative Office (GSID) from the citizens of the developing member countries of Asian Development Bank (including Pakistan), for the Master's Program sponsored by the ADB-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) for the academic year 2009 at Nagoya University Japan.

Application Requirements
The applicant must be a citizen of one of the developing member countries (excluding Hong Kong, China; the Republic of Korea; Singapore; and Taipei, China) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited/recognized university of the highest standard, at least two years of work experience in the public or private sector, not be more than 35 years old at the time of application and have a TOEFL score of 550 (or TOEFL Computer-based Test (CBT) score of 213, TOEFL Internet-Based Test (iBT) score of 79) or higher. The applicant must be in a good health. He/she must be willing to return to his/her home country to contribute to its development after completion of studies under the program or when dismissed from the school. Only those who meet these eligibility conditions are considered for selection.
Note: Japanese citizens and residents in Japan (including Dependent Visa holders) are not eligible to apply. Also, Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, officials and staff of ADB, as well as their close relatives, are not eligible for a scholarship.

Admission Openings A total of up to seven students can be accepted.

Filing Period Applications will be accepted from July 4 (Friday) to July 17 (Thursday) 2008, by registered mail only (Applications MUST arrive at the office by July 17, 2008). Any applications arrived after this date will not be considered for processing.

Required Documents
The following documents should be submitted to the ADB Administrative Office (GSID), Educational Affairs Division for Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences. The original forms of the following (1), (6) and (10) are available on the GSID website (PDF, MSWord). Be sure to use the designated GSID forms (ADB forms are not acceptable). Please fill out and send in. Black ink or typed forms must be used. (Application Checklist: PDF, MS-Word)
Application form with 3 photograph attached—the photos should be taken within the last three months and be of passport size and quality (PDF, MSWord)
Certificate of citizenship (or a copy of your valid passport)
Certificates to show your own income and that of your parents or family (Note: If the incomes are not clearly certified, the applicant may be excluded from selection. Please submit authorized certificates issued by public agencies).
Research and/or work experience on a separate piece of paper. (Note: Attach documents from present / former places of research and work certifying your research and/or work record).
Research Proposal (about 800 words, on a separate piece of paper)
Two confidential sealed letters of recommendation—in sealed envelopes, signed across the flap. Recommendations should be written by people who have supervised applicant in either an academic or work capacity, and who are well acquainted with the intellectual ability and personality of applicant. Preferably, one should be from a university professor and the other from a senior staff member of your current working office (if there is some reason why your letters of recommendation are not from such people, please include a letter of explanation). Official transcript from each college-level institution attended—in sealed envelopes, signed across the flap.
Certified copy of diploma or certificate of degree from each college-level institution attended.
TOEFL score, IELTS or other internationally-reputed tests

Selection Procedure
The Asian Development Bank will select scholarship recipients from the selected candidates who have passed the screening by GSID. The scholarship recipients will be notified through the ADB Administrative Office (GSID) Educational Affairs Division for Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences in early December 2008.
Note: The recipients of ADB-JSP must undertake in writing that they will return to their home countries immediately after the completion of their program of study or when dismissed from the school.

Scholarship Coverage and Period
The following expenditures will be covered by the scholarship: full tuition, medical and accident insurance obtained through Nagoya University, a monthly stipend including subsistence and housing allowance for one person. (For the Year 2008, monthly stipend is 170,000 yen. This may be changed for the Year 2009), a book allowance, other miscellaneous expenses and economy class airfare for one person covering the trip from the scholar’s place of residence to Nagoya University and the return journey at the end of the study program. The initial scholarship period is one year from April 2009 - March 2010. The extension of the scholarship for the second year of the program shall be conditional on the scholar maintaining a satisfactory level of academic performance.
