20+ PhD Scholarships,International School of Advanced Studies

At least 20 scholarships are available for PhD courses at the International School of Advanced Studies (SAS) at University of Camerino, Italy. The selection is open to graduates regardless of their nationality.

The University of Camerino, Italy – International School of Advanced Studies (from here named SAS) is opening a call for PhD courses (XXIV cycle) in the areas of scientific research listed below:
Architecture and Design
Chemical, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biotechnology
Earth Sciences
Information Science and Complex Systems
Legal, Political and Social Sciences
Life Sciences
Physics
Veterinary Sciences

General Description
The course length is three years with a final thesis to be written in English. In addition to the research, the course includes training activities on general and cross-disciplinary subjects and courses directed toward the specific areas of each curriculum. Conducting some research in public or private laboratories external to the host University is strongly encouraged. To attain the final qualification there should be at least six months residence at a non-Italian institution, to be decided in consultation with the degree supervisor.
At least 20 fellowships are guaranteed prior to the selection procedure. The number may be further increased thanks to agreements and conventions with externals bodies; the updating of the fellowships will be available on the web site http://www.unicam.it/laureati/dottorato/index.asp
All fellowships will be distributed in accordance with the selection procedures. On the basis of the final Merit List, further places without fellowships will be made available. Applicants should indicate whether they can obtain financial support from private and/or public institutions apart from the University of Camerino.


Eligibility to Apply
The selection is open to graduates regardless of nationality, in possession of a five year university degree or its non-Italian equivalent. In cases where the University degree of the candidate is not officially recognized as equivalent, the Council of the SAS will rule on the validity of the degree qualification obtained abroad for the sole purpose of allowing participation in the admission process. The selection is also open to candidates who do not already possess the required degree, provided conferral takes place by October 31, 2008. In this case admission will be conditional, and the candidate will be required to present the degree certificate or a notarised copy before November 10, 2008.

Candidates will be notified immediately upon receipt of their application.
Candidates must complete the attached application form, providing a pre-formatted letter of presentation available on the website. The candidate is responsible for ensuring that the letter has been received from the SAS. Absence of the letter will automatically exclude the candidate.
Any other useful information that would assist the application should be attached.


Selection Process
A first selection of candidates will be made by a University Committee comprising of Professors representing the major scientific areas of all PhD courses. This selection will consider the materials submitted, the qualifications, the information furnished by the presenter and the opinion of an anonymous reviewer nominated by the Director of SAS.
At the end of the selection procedure, the University Committee will draw up a list of suitable candidates and separate it into sub-lists for each research area. This will be sent to the Area Committees for their subsequent evaluation.
Each Area Committee will conduct interviews of the candidates using a format decided on by the committee, preferably via electronic communication. Care will be taken not to discriminate against or discourage candidates from abroad. Examination conditions will be communicated to candidates without delay.
The Area Committee will then compile a final Merit List that takes into account the evaluation by the University Committee and the result of the examination.
The final Merit List will be published within 24 hours of the completion of final selections on the website of the SAS (http://www.unicam.it/unicam-poi/dottorato). Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the rankings. Places not covered by scholarship will be awarded on the same basis

University Committee
The University Committee is composed of eight members belonging to each of the general scientific areas of the doctoral courses designated by the SAS, together with two graduate student representatives from the Council of the SAS, a Chairman (appointed by the Rector), and two external auditors (to represent sponsors of external fellowships), nominated by the Academic Senate, on advice from the Rector.
The Area Committees will be nominated by the Rector on advice from the teaching staff of the doctoral courses for each area. Each Committee will comprise three university Professors with expertise in the research topics covered by the doctoral courses the committee is evaluating. To this can be added no more than two experts, preferably non-Italian, chosen from public or private research institutions.
The curriculum vitae of the members of both the Area and University Committees will be made public on the web-site of the SAS.


Scholarship
The net amount of the scholarships is, as a minimum, 1000 Euro per month, but it can be higher in accordance with relevant legislation.
To qualify for payment of the scholarship, there is a limit set for total annual gross personal income in accordance with the relevant regulation.
Fellowships will be paid in 36 monthly instalments, at the beginning of each month. Anyone who takes up a fellowship, even for a period less than the full duration of the course, cannot apply for a fellowship a second time.
Fellowships cannot be held in conjunction with any other fellowship, apart from those awarded by national or foreign institutions for the purpose of completing the program of doctoral research with stays in foreign countries
Candidates, appearing in the Merit List who benefit from a University Research Allowance (Assegno di Ricerca, according to the definition by Italian academic rules) will be admitted as additional entrants even if they do not appear among the winners.
The University guarantees medical treatment for non European doctoral students with the same conditions as for Italian students. The relevant cost of medical treatment for doctoral students on scholarship will be borne by the scholarship and for doctoral students without a scholarship it will be borne by the budget of the SAS.


Tuition Fees
Annual tuition fees for attendance in the courses is €830.00 + €90.00 local fees broken down into:
1st instalment €490.00 (upon enrolling);
2nd instalment € 430.00 (by 30th June each year).
Qualified graduate students with Doctoral fellowships, are exempt from paying the tuition fees.
