Introduction
The graduate program for international students at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Saitama University offers highly qualified individuals from overseas opportunities to pursue graduate studies and research in the field of civil and environmental engineering. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Saitama University, as part of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, offers Master of Engineering and Doctor of Engineering/Doctor of Philosophy Degree programs in broad range of civil and environmental engineering. The graduate program includes courses specially designed for international students, in which class instruction and research supervision are given in English and/or Japanese. The programs start either in April or October and require an average residency of two years for a Master of Engineering candidate and three years for a Doctor of Engineering/Doctor of Philosophy candidate. Most of the students are financially supported by the scholarships.

Scholarships
The program is highly competitive and admits only twenty to twenty-five students each year, out of which about:
seven to ten candidates are awarded the prestigious Monbukagakusho Scholarship administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of the Government of Japan.
Another ten to fifteen outstanding candidates are awarded the:

ADB-JSP Scholarship administered by the Asian Development Bank
JJ/WB GSP Scholarship administered by the World Bank
SPJU Scholarship administered by the Inter-American Development Bank
All scholarships cover tuition and academic fees, a monthly allowance of about 175,000 Yen, and a round-trip air ticket to the awardee's home country. Some grants are available for books and research travel within Japan. The Monbukagakusho Scholarship for Doctoral Course is granted for up to three years based on satisfactory performance of the student. The Master's Degree scholarships are granted for two years.

PhD Fellowships, Netherlands Fellowship Programmes

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are demand-driven fellowship programmes designed to foster capacity building within organizations in 57 developing countries by providing training and education to their mid-career staff members.

Deadlines: 1 Jun 2009 and 1 Oct 2009

Requirements for eligibility
A candidate applying for an NFP fellowship for a PhD degree programme must:
be a national of and working in one of the 57 developing countries have been unconditionally admitted to a Dutch institution as a PhD student. This means that the applicant must have met all the academic requirements set by the Dutch university or institute;
have completed an NFP PhD Study application form and have submitted all the required documentation to the Netherlands embassy or consulate;
offer proof that the PhD will be pursued according to a ‘sandwich’ or ‘picnic’ model, which means that a large portion of the PhD research will take place in the candidate’s home country;
be nominated by his or her employer, who pledges to continue paying the candidate’s salary and guarantees the candidate will be able to return to an equivalent position after the termination of the fellowship period. Partial payment of salary can sometimes be allowed as an exception to the rule. It is up to the Dutch embassy to decide if an agreement between the employer and the candidate about partial continuation of payment of salary is acceptable. It should be realized, however, that the NFP allowances are not sufficient to support family members, either in the home country or in the Netherlands;
not be employed by a large industrial, commercial, international or multinational organization, which can be assumed to have sufficient resources of their own to finance staff training;
offer evidence that he or she is sufficiently skilled in speaking and writing in the language of communication during the PhD, which may be English, French or Spanish. If this is English, candidates who have received their tertiary education in any language other than English must provide evidence in the form of a score in an internationally recognized test, such as IELTS (a score of at least 6.0) or TOEFL (a score of at least 550 points on the paper based test or 213 points on the computer-based test or 79 on the internet-based test). An exception to this rule is made for candidates who have received their tertiary education in English, and for candidates who have previously attended a course or programme at a Dutch educational institution in this language, but no longer than two years ago;
be available full–time to pursue the PhD without interruption, and be physically and mentally able to take part in the entire programme;
declare that they will return to their home country immediately after the period of study and research in the Netherlands has ended.

Employer support
The need for education and training must occur within the organization of the applicant. This means that applicants must be nominated by their employers. In fact, applications without the support of an employer will not be considered.

Applying for NFP
Applicants must first gain academic admission to the course of their choice before applying for a fellowship through the Netherlands embassy or consulate in their country. Also, they can only apply for an NFP fellowship if the course is on the NFP course list for that particular year. In all cases, applicants are advised to contact the Netherlands embassy or consulate, well in advance for specific instructions, and to inquire about specific local procedures and deadlines, requirements and selection criteria.

Application procedure
The application and selection procedure consists of the following steps:
Application for admission at a Dutch educational institution
Candidates must first apply for academic admission at an eligible Dutch institution. Admission as a PhD student is granted on an individual basis. Senior academic staff or a specific PhD committee decides whether or not an applicant will be accepted. Usually the assessment is based on the research proposal submitted by the applicant. A candidate can apply for a PhD fellowship only after a research proposal has been agreed between the candidate and the Dutch provider.

Application for a fellowship
After receiving their letter of admission, candidates can apply for an NFP fellowship by presenting a completed NFP PhD Study application form to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in the candidate’s own country, accompanied by the necessary documentation. The form can also be obtained from the Netherlands embassy or consulate. Candidates should send their fellowship application forms directly to to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in their own country.
The embassy or consulate assesses each application against the criteria listed above. Special attention is given to:
whether the application stems from a multi-year agreement concluded with selected organizations;
the relevance of the proposed research for the candidate’s organization and country;
proof that the candidate’s employer and the Dutch institution support the application.
The embassies and consulates forward the fellowship applications that meet all of the criteria to Nuffic.
Nuffic selects the candidates who will receive PhD fellowships based on the relevance of the proposed research for the candidate’s employing organization and home country.
Nuffic informs the candidate, the Dutch embassy and the providing institution of its decision.
Nuffic awards the grant for the provider to cover the fellowship holders’ expenses, including the tuition fees.
The Dutch providers pay each fellowship holder a monthly allowance for the duration of the master’s degree programme; they also administer the fellowships, make logistical arrangements, and give guidance to the fellowship holders.

The provider then informs all applicants of its decisions. Successful candidates will receive a letter indicating that they have been (provisionally) admitted. Admission must be unconditional in terms of the candidate’s education and language proficiency. Admission may be granted provisionally, subject to the candidate finding suitable funding for the programme.
Candidates are eligible for a fellowship only if they have been admitted to their chosen master’s degree programme and meet all the criteria. Candidates can only apply for a fellowship for one programme per fellowship application deadline. Being admitted to more than one programme with the same fellowship application deadline means that candidates will have to select one programme before applying for a fellowship.

Netherlands After receiving their letter of admission, candidates can apply for an NFP fellowship by presenting a completed NFP master’s degree programme application form (given below to download) to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in their own country, accompanied by the necessary documentation. The application should be submitted well before the deadline for applications. The form can also be obtained from the Netherlands embassy or consulate. Some embassies require applications to be submitted in duplicate. In other countries applications have to be submitted to the embassies through local governmental organizations. Candidates are therefore advised to check any local regulations with the Netherlands embassy in their country. Candidates should forward fellowship application to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in their own country.

The embassy or consulate assesses each application against the criteria listed above. Special attention is given to:
whether the application was submitted before the deadline;
whether the application stems from multi-year agreements made with selected organizations;
whether the candidate has presented a letter of admission to the programme in question;
whether the information accompanying the application is complete and correct, and whether the required documentation (such as passport, diplomas and language test) is in order;
whether the programme is on the list of master’s degree programmes;
whether the programme has added value for the sustainable capacity development of the employing organization and the development of the NFP country;
whether the candidate fulfils any other specific requirements set by the embassy, consulate or country in question.

The embassies and consulates forward the fellowship applications that meet all of the criteria to Nuffic.
Nuffic decides how many fellowships will be available for each programme. The allocation of fellowships between the various programmes is based on the number of eligible applicants for each programme.
The Dutch provider then selects the candidates who will receive fellowships. The provider informs all candidates of its decisions, and applies to Nuffic for a grant.
Nuffic awards the grant for the provider to cover the fellowship holders’ expenses, including the tuition fees.
The Dutch providers pay each fellowship holder a monthly allowance for the duration of the master’s degree programme; they also administer the fellowships, make logistical arrangements, and give guidance to the fellowship holders.

Their common research topic within the GSBC is the analysis of human behaviour with an emphasis on social and economic change. The principal research focus of the GSBC is interdisciplinary. Scholarships Eligibility
The scholarships are available in all Schools, for all areas of research, and are open to Home/EU and International applicants who lack funding but have outstanding academic merit and excellent research potential.
The scheme supports only full-time postgraduate research students and is not available for undergraduate or postgraduate TAUGHT courses.
Each year 75 of the scholarships will waive 100% of tuition fees and 50 scholarships will waive 50% of tuition fees.
Applicants must be able to fund all living costs and any bench fees (specific research costs).

The Government of Western Australia, through the Department of Education and Training (DET), is offering a number of prestigious scholarships for international students to undertake the Western Australian Universities’ Foundation Program (WAUFP) or Tertiary Entrance Examination (TEE) program at either Canning College or Tuart College in Perth, Western Australia (WA). General Description
Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of academic results and a reference from the school. Where academic results do not allow for differentiation between applicants, resumes or curriculum vitae will be considered.
Scholarships apply for Year 12 level courses; 'WA Universities’ Foundation Program and Tertiary Entrance Examination Program'.
Year 11 students at Tuart College or Canning College may apply for an award on the basis of their Year 11 results.
The closing date for all scholarship applications will be 31 October 2008. Notifications will be issued within two weeks of the closing date.

Full Scholarships
Six (6) Full Scholarships covering the course fee of A$13,500 will be awarded with three (3) allocated by each College.
To be awarded a full scholarship requires a student to have achieved outstanding academic results. This would normally require the student to have achieved the highest possible grade in at least six (6) subjects. Students will be required to complete an International Student Application Form, an International Scholarship Application Form and pay an A$200 non-refundable fee.
The A$200 fee will be deducted from the student’s tuition fees in the event of not gaining any scholarship but enrolling at one of the Colleges.
College staff will not offer these scholarships during promotional visits.

Reference from the school principal.
Actual or mock/forecast/preliminary results for major examinations equivalent to Year 11 in Western Australia.
Two (2) most recent school reports.
Curriculum Vitae or resume.

Partial $5,000 Scholarships
Twenty (20) scholarships to the value of A$5,000 are being offered with ten (10) allocated to each College.
This award would normally require the student to have achieved the highest possible grade in at least five (5) subjects.
These scholarships may be offered to students at anytime, including during marketing visits. Such students must pay a non-refundable deposit of A$500 within two (2) weeks of the offer or forfeit the scholarship.
Students accepting one of these scholarships will also be considered for a full scholarship and the A$500 deposit will be transferred to the refundable Bond.
There is no application fee for a partial scholarships awarded by College staff during overseas marketing visits.
Any scholarship funds not allocated during overseas marketing visits will be awarded at the same time as the full scholarships.
Any students wanting to be considered in October/November are required to pay the A$200 non-refundable fee as outlined in the conditions for applying for a full scholarship.

Notification of success or otherwise will be by 15 November 2008.

PhD Program and Scholarships
The IMPRS-CS (International Max Planck Research School for Computer Science) offers a Ph.D program upon successful completion of which students receive a Doctorate Degree in Computer Science from Saarland University. The PhD program is open to students who already hold a Master's degree and wish to pursue a PhD in Computer Science. In addition, students who have a Bachelor's degree from a 4-year program at a research-oriented institution and have shown outstanding performance (as demonstrated, for example, by refereed publications) are also eligible.
IMPRS-CS holds a funding agreement with Microsoft Research Cambridge (MSRC), which will contribute towards PhD scholarships in areas of research related to MSRC starting in 2008. Recipients of these scholarships have the opportunity for internships at MSRC and other collaboration with a world-leading industrial research lab.

DESCRIPTION:
Fellows work full-time for one year with Human Rights Watch in New York, Washington, D.C., or London (Aryeh Neier fellows will work full-time, for an additional year, at the ACLU). Fellows monitor human rights developments in various countries, conduct on-site investigations, draft reports on human rights conditions, and engage in advocacy aimed at publicizing and curtailing human rights violations. Past fellows have conducted research and advocacy on numerous different issues in countries all over the world. A few recent examples are: a project on the rights of Iraqi refugees in Syria and Lebanon; on violations of the rights of girls in juvenile custody in New York State; on corporal punishment of children in southern public schools in the US; on the rights of Bhutanese refugees in Nepal and India; on abuses against Sri Lankan migrant domestic workers; and abuses committed in the context of the Naxal conflict in Chhattisgarh state, India.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have exceptional analytic skills, an ability to write and speak clearly, and a commitment to work in the human rights field in the future. Proficiency in one language in addition to English is strongly desired. Familiarity with countries or regions where serious human rights violations occur is also valued. Depending on the fellowship for which they wish to apply, prospective fellows must be graduates of law, journalism, international relations, or other relevant studies, or must provide evidence of significant, comparable, relevant work experience (please see our Frequently Asked Questions section for the specific requirements of the various fellowships.

AOSD-Europe is an academia-industry collaboration funded by the EC FP6 Programme aimed at addressing research challenges in AOSD on a large-scale: from requirements analysis and design through to implementation and validation. Research in the project is organised into four geographically distributed research labs. The Analysis and Design lab addresses research issues relating to aspect-oriented requirements engineering and architecture/design modelling. Work in the Languages lab focuses on novel aspect language features and implementation technologies. The Formal Methods lab is concerned with verification and validation challenges for AOSD techniques. The Applications lab is a medium for experimentally and empirically validating the research results in large-scale applications and middleware.
Each successful candidate will be expected to work closely with the body of researchers involved in one of the four labs. The candidate will be based at one or two locations (depending on the focus of the work) during his/her visit and will have an opportunity to work with leading researchers in AOSD. S/he will also be able to work with state-of-the-art AOSD tools offered by the AOSD-Europe Atelier: a software workbench for AOSD.
There are four bursaries available, one for each lab. However, excellence will be the sole criteria for award of the bursaries. We also encourage applications which cross lab boundaries. Two bursaries are specifically aimed at spending all or part of the period at Lancaster University, UK, the project coordinator, and hence will provide holders an opportunity to gain a global view of the network’s activities.

Selection Process

Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis. External interdisciplinary panels of distinguished scholars and practitioners assess the applications. The panels’ recommendations are presented to the Center’s Fellowships Committee of the Board of Trustees, composed of public officials who serve ex officio, citizens appointed by the President of the United States, and citizens from the private sector. The Fellowships Committee of the Board of Trustees makes the final decisions on selection.
The basic criteria for selection are:
significance of the proposed research, including the importance and originality of the project;
quality of the proposal in definition, organization, clarity, and scope;
capabilities and achievements of the applicant and the likelihood that the applicant will accomplish the proposed project;
the relevance of the project to contemporary policy issues.
The Center welcomes in particular those projects that transcend narrow specialties and methodological issues of interest only within a specific academic discipline. Projects should involve fresh research—in terms of both the overall field and the author’s previous work. It is essential that projects have relevance to the world of public policy, and fellows should want, and be prepared, to interact with policymakers in Washington and with Wilson Center staff who are working on similar issues.

Themes

The Center devotes significant attention to the exploration of broad thematic areas.
Primary themes are:
governance, including such issues as the key features of the development of democratic institutions, democratic society, civil society, and citizen participation;
the U.S. role in the world and issues of partnership and leadership—military, political, and economic dimensions; and
key long-term future challenges confronting the United States and the world.
While the Center does not engage in formulating actual policy, priority will be given to proposals related to these themes and intersecting with crucial public policy issues. Within this framework, the Center also welcomes projects that provide the historical and/or cultural context for some of today’s significant public policy debates.

Fellows’ Responsibilities

The Center’s “scholars in residence” are so in both name and fact. Fellows are expected to work from their offices at the Center and to participate in appropriate meetings organized by the Center. Fellows are also expected to present their research at our informal internal Work-in-Progress seminars, and to attend the Work-in-Progress presentations given by their colleagues. In addition, fellows are encouraged to make a more formal presentation to the public such as a colloquium, seminar, workshop, or other form of meeting. The Center expects all fellows to seek ways to share their expertise with the Washington policy community. The form of such interaction could range from a deep background briefing for an executive branch agency to an informal roundtable discussion with members of Congress and their staffs.

Stipend

The Center tries to ensure that the stipend provided under the fellowship, together with the fellow’s other sources of funding (e.g., grants secured by the applicant and sabbatical allowances), approximate a fellow’s regular salary. Stipends provided in recent years have ranged from $26,000 to $85,000 (the maximum possible). Stipends include round trip travel for fellows. If spouses and/or dependent children will reside with the fellow for the entire fellowship period, money for their travel will also be included in the stipend. In addition to stipends, the Center provides 75 percent of health insurance premiums for fellows who elect Center coverage and for their accompanying family members.

Length of Appointment

Fellows are expected to be in residence for the entire U.S. academic year (early September through May, i.e., nine months), although a few fellowships are occasionally awarded for shorter periods with a minimum of four months. The Center does not award fellowships for the summer months (June, July, August). Fellowships cannot be deferred, and extensions into the summer months have not been possible in recent years.

The Center holds one round of competitive selection per year. Fellowship applications must be postmarked or submitted online by October 1, 2008. Applicants are notified of the results of the selection process by March of the following year.

Objective
Research grants provide young foreign academics and scientists (including Pakistanis) with an opportunity to carry out a research project or a course of continuing education and training at a German state (public) or state-recognised higher education institution or non-university research institute. Research grants can be used to carry out:
research projects at a German higher education institution for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in the home country (this includes the doctoral programmes offered for developing and transformation countries under the "DAAD Sandwich Model" - see Information Leaflet, which is also available on the Internet www.daad.de/extrainfo);
research projects at a German university for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in Germany; for projects of these kinds, we would particularly refer to the structured doctoral study programmes, such as Research Training Groups or Doctoral Research Groups, International Postgraduate Programmes, Graduate Schools, Max Planck Research Schools, etc. Please go to the following website for further information: www.daad.de/ipp;
research projects or continuing education and training, but without aiming for a formal degree/qualification.

Duration
The length of the grant is set by the grant committee at the selection session. Depending on the project in question and on the applicant's work schedule, grants can be paid generally for between one and ten months, in the case of full doctoral programmes in Germany for up to three years, and in exceptions for up to a maximum of four years.
Support can only be provided for the completion of a full doctoral programme in Germany when special support policy reasons exist. Such reasons include, for example, the lack of comparable research or academic supervision opportunities in the home country or when the doctoral topic requires several years of research in Germany.

Support for full doctoral programmes in Germany is based on a programme length of three years; if foreign graduates first have to qualify for admission to a doctoral programme, then grants can be awarded for a period of four years. Even when support has been awarded for a full doctoral programme, that award will initially be limited to a maximum of one year. Extensions then depend on whether or not the evaluation finds the previous award period to have been successfully completed.

Value
Depending on the award holder's academic level, the DAAD will pay a monthly award of 750 euros (graduates holding a first degree) or 1,000 euros (doctoral candidates). As a rule, the scholarship additionally includes certain payments towards health insurance cover in Germany. Furthermore, the DAAD generally will pay an appropriate flat-rate travel allowance, unless these costs are covered by the home country or by another funding source.
Award holders completing a stay of more than six months receive a study and research allowance plus, where appropriate, a rent subsidy and family allowance. Funding for attendance of a language course is decided on a case-by-case basis (cf. Requirements).
When award holders take doctoral programmes run under the "DAAD Sandwich Model", then the award may include the travel expenses of an academic supervisor - as long as this was already applied for in the first application.

Requirements
Applications for DAAD research grants are open to excellently-qualified university graduates who hold a Diplom or Master's degree at the time they commence the grant-supported research and, in exceptional cases, graduates holding a Bachelor's degree or already holding a doctorate/PhD (post-docs).

It is required that doctoral candidates wishing to take a doctorate/PhD in their home country will already have been admitted to an appropriate course at their home university.
The application papers must generally include written confirmation of academic supervision by a professor in Germany and expressly refer to the applicant's project, thereby confirming that the host institute will provide a workplace. If the applicant is planning to complete a doctorate at the German host university, the letter of confirmation must come from the academic supervisor (Doktorvater/Doktormutter) for the applicant's doctoral programme/thesis.
Applicants who intend to gain their doctorate within the scope of a structured doctoral study programme are required to present a letter of admission from their study programme or at least proof that they are being considered for admission.

Besides previous study achievements, the most important selection criterion is a convincing and well-planned research or continuing education and training project to be completed during the stay in Germany and which has been coordinated and agreed with an academic supervisor at the chosen German host institute.

German language skills are generally required, although the required level also depends on the applicant's project and topic, as well as on the available opportunities for learning German in the applicant's home country. In the natural sciences and in engineering disciplines, in particular, and when English is spoken at the host institute, proof of good English language skills may also be accepted. The DAAD decides on a case-by-case basis whether the applicant can attend a German language course before beginning the research grant (free of charge for the award holder). This option is only available for research grants lasting more than six months. The country-specific information on the DAAD homepage will tell you which language skills are required from applicants from your home country.

At the time of application, generally no more than six years should have passed since the graduate gained the last degree; in the case of doctoral students, no more than three years should have passed since starting the doctoral process; and in the case of postdocs, no more than four years should have passed since gaining the doctorate. Depending on the country of origin of applicants, for example, special conditions prevailing in the home country education system, etc., exceptions are possible. Applicants, who have been resident in Germany for longer than one year at the time of application, cannot be considered.

(Scheme B)Postgraduate Degree Courses with Relevance to Developing Countries
Objective
"Postgraduate degree courses with relevance to developing countries" aim to qualify experts and executives from developing countries in fields such as trade, business and administration. These postgraduate degree courses offer career-based and practice-oriented initial and continuing training. Duration
Those degree courses which end with a Master's degree generally last between 12 and 24 months. The three degree courses leading to a doctorate generally last 36 months.
In most cases, studies begin in October, while the preparatory German language courses start in April or August. Differing arrangements are specified in the description of the individual degree courses and programmes.

Value
A monthly scholarship instalment is paid. Its level is based on the scholarship holder's level of qualification (as a rule € 715 or € 975).

Requirements
Application is open to experts and executives from developing countries who hold a university degree and have gained at least two years of career experience in a position in industry, business or administration which is relevant to the respective chosen postgraduate degree course.
Age limit: 36 at the time of application (some postgraduate degree courses set an age limit of 32)
Language skills: Where postgraduate degree courses are instructed in English, applicants are required to have passed a TOEFL Test (minimum of 550 points) or an IELTS Test (Band 6). Where courses are taught in German, students will ideally have Grundstufe 3 (Beginners' Level 3) language skills. Participants in English-instructed postgraduate degree courses have an opportunity to attend a two-month intensive language course before their full studies commence. Scholarship holders taking German-instructed degree courses have an opportunity to attend a six-month intensive language course before their full studies begin. Important exception: The degree course in "International Marketing" offered at the FH Reutlingen University of Applied Sciences requires students to have excellent German language skills (DSH, TestDaF). No preparatory language course is offered.
The specific admissions requirements for individual degree courses can be found in the course descriptions which the German diplomatic missions and the DAAD regional offices abroad have available for consultation.

Applications are invited by ADB Administrative Office (GSID) from the citizens of the developing member countries of Asian Development Bank (including Pakistan), for the Master's Program sponsored by the ADB-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) for the academic year 2009 at Nagoya University Japan.

Application Requirements
The applicant must be a citizen of one of the developing member countries (excluding Hong Kong, China; the Republic of Korea; Singapore; and Taipei, China) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited/recognized university of the highest standard, at least two years of work experience in the public or private sector, not be more than 35 years old at the time of application and have a TOEFL score of 550 (or TOEFL Computer-based Test (CBT) score of 213, TOEFL Internet-Based Test (iBT) score of 79) or higher. The applicant must be in a good health. He/she must be willing to return to his/her home country to contribute to its development after completion of studies under the program or when dismissed from the school. Only those who meet these eligibility conditions are considered for selection.
Note: Japanese citizens and residents in Japan (including Dependent Visa holders) are not eligible to apply. Also, Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, officials and staff of ADB, as well as their close relatives, are not eligible for a scholarship.

Admission Openings A total of up to seven students can be accepted.

Filing Period Applications will be accepted from July 4 (Friday) to July 17 (Thursday) 2008, by registered mail only (Applications MUST arrive at the office by July 17, 2008). Any applications arrived after this date will not be considered for processing.

Selection Procedure
The Asian Development Bank will select scholarship recipients from the selected candidates who have passed the screening by GSID. The scholarship recipients will be notified through the ADB Administrative Office (GSID) Educational Affairs Division for Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences in early December 2008.
Note: The recipients of ADB-JSP must undertake in writing that they will return to their home countries immediately after the completion of their program of study or when dismissed from the school.

Scholarship Coverage and Period
The following expenditures will be covered by the scholarship: full tuition, medical and accident insurance obtained through Nagoya University, a monthly stipend including subsistence and housing allowance for one person. (For the Year 2008, monthly stipend is 170,000 yen. This may be changed for the Year 2009), a book allowance, other miscellaneous expenses and economy class airfare for one person covering the trip from the scholar’s place of residence to Nagoya University and the return journey at the end of the study program. The initial scholarship period is one year from April 2009 - March 2010. The extension of the scholarship for the second year of the program shall be conditional on the scholar maintaining a satisfactory level of academic performance.

General Description
The course length is three years with a final thesis to be written in English. In addition to the research, the course includes training activities on general and cross-disciplinary subjects and courses directed toward the specific areas of each curriculum. Conducting some research in public or private laboratories external to the host University is strongly encouraged. To attain the final qualification there should be at least six months residence at a non-Italian institution, to be decided in consultation with the degree supervisor.
At least 20 fellowships are guaranteed prior to the selection procedure. The number may be further increased thanks to agreements and conventions with externals bodies; the updating of the fellowships will be available on the web site http://www.unicam.it/laureati/dottorato/index.asp
All fellowships will be distributed in accordance with the selection procedures. On the basis of the final Merit List, further places without fellowships will be made available. Applicants should indicate whether they can obtain financial support from private and/or public institutions apart from the University of Camerino.

Eligibility to Apply
The selection is open to graduates regardless of nationality, in possession of a five year university degree or its non-Italian equivalent. In cases where the University degree of the candidate is not officially recognized as equivalent, the Council of the SAS will rule on the validity of the degree qualification obtained abroad for the sole purpose of allowing participation in the admission process. The selection is also open to candidates who do not already possess the required degree, provided conferral takes place by October 31, 2008. In this case admission will be conditional, and the candidate will be required to present the degree certificate or a notarised copy before November 10, 2008.

Selection Process
A first selection of candidates will be made by a University Committee comprising of Professors representing the major scientific areas of all PhD courses. This selection will consider the materials submitted, the qualifications, the information furnished by the presenter and the opinion of an anonymous reviewer nominated by the Director of SAS.
At the end of the selection procedure, the University Committee will draw up a list of suitable candidates and separate it into sub-lists for each research area. This will be sent to the Area Committees for their subsequent evaluation.
Each Area Committee will conduct interviews of the candidates using a format decided on by the committee, preferably via electronic communication. Care will be taken not to discriminate against or discourage candidates from abroad. Examination conditions will be communicated to candidates without delay.
The Area Committee will then compile a final Merit List that takes into account the evaluation by the University Committee and the result of the examination.
The final Merit List will be published within 24 hours of the completion of final selections on the website of the SAS (http://www.unicam.it/unicam-poi/dottorato). Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the rankings. Places not covered by scholarship will be awarded on the same basis

University Committee
The University Committee is composed of eight members belonging to each of the general scientific areas of the doctoral courses designated by the SAS, together with two graduate student representatives from the Council of the SAS, a Chairman (appointed by the Rector), and two external auditors (to represent sponsors of external fellowships), nominated by the Academic Senate, on advice from the Rector.
The Area Committees will be nominated by the Rector on advice from the teaching staff of the doctoral courses for each area. Each Committee will comprise three university Professors with expertise in the research topics covered by the doctoral courses the committee is evaluating. To this can be added no more than two experts, preferably non-Italian, chosen from public or private research institutions.
The curriculum vitae of the members of both the Area and University Committees will be made public on the web-site of the SAS.

Scholarship
The net amount of the scholarships is, as a minimum, 1000 Euro per month, but it can be higher in accordance with relevant legislation.
To qualify for payment of the scholarship, there is a limit set for total annual gross personal income in accordance with the relevant regulation.
Fellowships will be paid in 36 monthly instalments, at the beginning of each month. Anyone who takes up a fellowship, even for a period less than the full duration of the course, cannot apply for a fellowship a second time.
Fellowships cannot be held in conjunction with any other fellowship, apart from those awarded by national or foreign institutions for the purpose of completing the program of doctoral research with stays in foreign countries
Candidates, appearing in the Merit List who benefit from a University Research Allowance (Assegno di Ricerca, according to the definition by Italian academic rules) will be admitted as additional entrants even if they do not appear among the winners.
The University guarantees medical treatment for non European doctoral students with the same conditions as for Italian students. The relevant cost of medical treatment for doctoral students on scholarship will be borne by the scholarship and for doctoral students without a scholarship it will be borne by the budget of the SAS.

Tuition Fees
Annual tuition fees for attendance in the courses is €830.00 + €90.00 local fees broken down into:
1st instalment €490.00 (upon enrolling);
2nd instalment € 430.00 (by 30th June each year).
Qualified graduate students with Doctoral fellowships, are exempt from paying the tuition fees.

The EIPRS are funded by the Australian Government and approximately 300 scholarships are awarded nationally each year. In 2008, 40 LTUFRRS will be available for commencing research candidates.

30 PhD Fellowships are available to the promising researchers from Asia under the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), RONPAKU Program for the year 2009.

Outline of JSPS RONPAKU Program

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has been carrying out the RONPAKU (Dissertation PhD) Program since 1978. The aim of this program is to provide tutorial and financial support for promising researchers in Asia who wish to obtain their PhD degrees from Japanese universities through the submission of a dissertation without matriculating a doctoral course.

Grantees under the program (RONPAKU fellows) are required to conduct their dissertation research under the joint supervision of a Japanese advisor and an advisor in their home country, and are expected to obtain their PhD degrees within a maximum period of five years. RONPAKU fellows are allowed to visit a Japanese university once a year to conduct research under the direct supervision of their Japanese advisor. The Japanese advisor may visit the RONPAKU fellow's home university or research institution when deemed necessary to supervise the fellow’s research together with his/her home advisor.

Eligible Fields

All fields within the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences are included.

Applicable Countries

Candidates must be a researcher whose university/institution is in one of the following countries:

Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Thailand or Vietnam, which have JSPS nominating organizations.

The candidate must be a researcher:-

Who has already achieved substantial research results and is likely through dissertation research under the program to successfully obtain a PhD degree
Who is employed full time at a university or research institution in his/her home country or will likely be appointed to such a position by April 1, 2009 (JSPS also treats Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers in this manner.)
Who is 49 years of age or younger as of April 1, 2009.

Cranfield School of Management - one of Europe’s top management schools - is offering this PhD studentship within its International Centre for Programme Management, a world-leading hub for research into this important emerging discipline. The studentship is tenable for four years from October 2008.

The repeated failure of major projects and programmes in the public and private sectors has been linked with the inability of project and programme managers to manage crisis situations effectively. One certainty in a world increasingly saturated with complexity and uncertainty is that the future will be punctuated by sudden, unexpected, and potent events that will require a rapid response. The variety of crisis that can arise in projects and programmes is enourmous.However, there are very few detailed accounts of crisis management. This PhD study will explore the phenomenon of crisis in projects and programmes - its nature, its causes and its resulting managerial behaviour. We envisage that the findings of the study will have significant theoretical and practical implications.

Applications are invited from exceptionally qualified candidates for this fully funded full-time studentship under the supervision of Dr Elmar Kutsch. Applicants should have a good first degree in a relevant discipline. Experience of working on projects is desirable, although not essential. The course in Transnational Law and Finance contains 120 ECTS creditsthat the students willfollow in two academic years and in three of the four participating institutions.

For the second year three specialization areas offered: Law and Finances in the Institute of Law and Finance in Frankfurt University and European Business Law and Industrial and Intellectual Property in the Robert Schumann Strasbourg University.
The Programme presents therefore two important elements: The core courses that must be followed by all the students. This part of the Master offers every European or non-European student the necessary tools for the analysis of Trans-national trade operations.

Subsequently the candidates who have obtained the equivalence of their degree will be selected by the Evaluation Committee on the basis of a comparative evaluation.

Requirements
The GSfBS is open for students from all countries (including Pakistanis). Once you are accepted into the programme you will be enrolled at the University of Cologne. To be accepted as doctoral student you must hold a Master’s/Diploma degree. In exceptional cases we can accept students with an excellent BSc (1st class honours) who might need to attend additional courses and seminars during their first year or can apply for our Fast Track Masters/Doctoral programme. The programme’s language is English and therefore a good knowledge of English is absolutely required. We encourage you to support your candidature with scores of internationally valid language exams like TOEFL, IELTS, or other tests. However this information is not mandatory.

Evaluation and selection procedure
All applications will be reviewed during the application time frame, prior to the application deadline. A shortlist will be created based on the best written applications and excellent reference letters (do not send these directly to us, we contact your referees). Candidates on this list might be contacted by coordinators and faculty for telephone interviews. Afterwards, the best candidates will be invited for our selection workshop taking place about several weeks after the admission deadline. The selection workshop will take place on two days. On the first day candidates will give a 10 minute oral presentation about their previous scientific work (e.g. their Masters thesis) and are then asked questions by the audience for 5-10 minutes. In the afternoon there will be half hour interviews with faculty and coordinators. As preparatory material for the interviews you will be provided with one or two publications 10 days in advance. On the second day you will have the chance to visit research groups and talk to group members. You will also get the chance to meet students from other structured programmes and get a guided tour to learn more about the Institutes. Final decisions for the awarding of doctoral fellowships will be within one week after the selection workshop.

Tips for your application
Because we can only accept applications that are complete, you should take your time in completing the PDF form (see link below). If you are having problems getting certain documents or have gaps in your CV you should provide us with explanations. Sloppy applications will definitely fail to make it on our shortlist. With your written application you show us that you are informed about the research activities of the involved faculty and that you have knowledge of the respective scientific publications in your field(s) of interest. We have seen applications where the proposed research project was described so poorly that we could not consider these candidates further! Please make sure that you think carefully about this part of the application and make use of the permitted 4000 characters (including blanks) to give us a first impression of your scientific creativity and conceptual understanding. However, please do not try to copy/paste published text pieces, as we will control for plagiarism and this will immediately remove you for studentship consideration.

Tips for the telephone interviews
Telephone interviews give us the opportunity to learn more about your personality and what type of scientist you are. Open questions resulting from your written application can be addressed and we will learn about your oral English language proficiency. Also, we will definitely ask deeper questions on the research proposal you have submitted with your written application. Furthermore, we are interested in your understanding of certain analytical techniques and your educational background including your Master’s thesis. Telephone interviews are very important because after these we have to decide whom to invite for our selection workshop. It is therefore very important for you to be well prepared before you pick up the receiver.

Tips for the workshop
Ten minutes for a presentation may seem to be short, but we would like to listen to many candidates and thus must impose time constraints. Depending on your scientific background you may not have worked in a field that is related to the research done at our Institute. Your presentation should therefore be clear to an audience that may not be familiar with your topic. It is important that you give a general introduction into the topic and lead the audience carefully through the figures presented. Keep to the time limit! Usually the real presentation takes longer than the rehearsals, and we will have to interrupt you if you need longer. Thus, you may miss the chance to tell your full story. Be well prepared for the discussion since you might get a lot of tough questions, e.g. why you were using certain techniques, what the aim of your project was, what the next steps in the project would be, what kind of further scientific questions would be interesting to address and how you would approach them methodologically etc. Are you (at least in theory) familiar with the methods in the research areas carried out in the groups of the IMPRS faculty? Think about approaches you are familiar with and ask yourself about their potentials and limitations.
Tips for the interviews
The interviews consist of two parts. They usually start with your summary of one of the two publications that will be provided to you at least 10 days prior to the workshop. By this, we want to see how well you deal with original literature. At this point and during the remaining discussion you can impress us with your knowledge, creative thoughts, and ideas. It is furthermore advisable to be well informed about the research in Colognes biology and the involved groups.

The programme
The programme begins with three seven-week research projects in different laboratories finished by written and oral rotation reports. This training period provides students with a comprehensive practical background of experimental techniques and approaches. It also helps you to familarize with the different labs of the Graduate School and to select a lab for your thesis research. At the same time, the research group leaders have the opportunity to assess the individual students. The decision of the final thesis research lab is made jointly, on the basis of both the students' and the supervisors' priorities. In outline, we operate this scheme as follows: all accepted students hand in a list of five labs in which they would particularly like to work. Based on these lists, students are assigned to the lab rotations. At the end of the rotation period, both students and supervisors hand in lists of first, second and third choices of labs and students, respectively. These lists are then used for final thesis lab assignments. From this point on the core programme of the GSfBS applies to students and faculty.

Introduction

The Master’s Program in Economic and Public Policy Management (PEPPM) is a trans-disciplinary program at the University of Tsukuba Japan, aimed at young professionals in developing and transition economies. Since its establishment in 1995, it has benefited from the sponsorship of the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP). PEPPM is a two-years Program, admitting new participants every two years. Since April 1995, seven cohorts composed of ten to fourteen participants from over thirty different countries have already been admitted to the Program. The eighth cohort, to be selected during 2008, will initiate its activities from April 2009.

Scholarship Support

Applicants admitted to the Program in Economic and Public Policy Management are eligible for scholarships provided by the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) of the World Bank.
Fifteen scholarships are provided by the JJ/WBGSP for this purpose. To be eligible, a candidate must be a national of a World Bank member country that is currently eligible to borrow from the Bank (Pakistan is an eligible country). In addition, Executive Directors, their alternates, and staff of the World Bank Group,including consultants, as well as their close relatives, are excluded from consideration.
In addition to these fifteen scholarships, the Japan-IDB Scholarship Program of the Inter-American Development Bank offers no less than two scholarships to applicants from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The scholarships cover:
· economy class travel between the home country and Tsukuba, plus a travel allowance of US$ 500 for each one-way trip
· tuition and other Program fees
· a monthly stipend for subsistence needs roughly equivalent to that given by the scholarships program of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (currently 170,000 yen monthly)
· medical insurance costs
These benefits cover only the scholarship recipient and are not extendable to family members.

Other costs not covered by the scholarship:
· additional travel during the course of the Program
· expenses related to research,supplementary educational materials,or participation in workshops,seminars, or internships while at the University of Tsukuba. The maximum period of funding is two years.

Application Procedure To apply, applicants must:

· Hold a bachelor’s degree and have completed 16 years of school education (up to undergraduate level). A strong background in economics and associated quantitative tools is useful and,in the case of the Economic Policy Course, highly recommended. NOTE: Those applicants having completed their university education in countries where formal schooling lasts less than 16 years, who are at least 22 years old, and who have spent at least one year in a research or similar institution, can become qualified to apply by filling out and submitting the provided form (Certificate of research Activities).

· Have at least 2 years (and preferably 4 to 5) of recent professional experience in a field related to economic development.
· Demonstrate proficiency in the use of the English language by submitting the TOEFL scores or other evidence as deemed appropriate by the Graduate School.
· Demonstrate verbal and quantitative skills by submitting the Graduate record Examination (GRE) scores or other evidence as deemed appropriate by the Graduate School.
· In addition,applicants must be under 45 (but preferably under 35) years of age. Priority will be given to mid-career professionals.

Screening and Admission Procedures
The screening process will be based upon the evaluation of all documentation and, if necessary, on personal interviews conducted by the University of Tsukuba representatives in the countries of the candidates. Between twenty five and thirty candidates will be pre-selected by the Joint Japan/World Bank Scholarship Program Committee at the University of Tsukuba, in a process that will be completed by november 2008.
The World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank will further screen the pre-selected applicants for the sake of the granting of scholarships. The final selection of scholarship recipients (fifteen from the World Bank and no less than two from the Inter-American Development Bank) will be announced in late December 2008.
Selected candidates are expected to arrive in Tsukuba at the end of March 2009 for final interviews and orientation. Those pre-selected candidates who did not receive a scholarship and want to study at the University of Tsukuba must pay admission and tuition fees (at least for half a year) before they are formally admitted into the Program.The Program will begin on April 1, 2009.

Villum Kann Rasmussen Fonden has recently awarded 25 million kroner to a new Centre of Excellence, NATEC, to perform fundamental research on nanophotonics for terabit communications. In this connection, a number of openings are available for postdoctoral and PhD candidates wishing to work in a rapidly evolving area of science and technology, with access to the newest equipment and in an intellectually stimulating atmosphere of highly reputed research groups.

The NATEC Centre will, in particular, perform research on light-matter interaction in semiconductor quantum dots and photonic crystal structures and explore the use of such nanostructured materials for realizing photonic chips operating in the terabit regime. The Centre is a strongly focused effort involving nanofabrication, experimental characterisation based on nanoscopy and ultrafast lasers, fundamental theory including topology optimization, and systems experiments and will provide ample opportunities for cross-fertilization between these areas.

The NATEC Centre is headed by Professor Jesper Mørk ( jm@com.dtu.dk ) from Department of Photonics Engineering, DTU, and involves the collaboration with 4 other institutes at DTU: Dept. of Micro- and Nanotechnology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Center for Electron Nanoscopy and Danchip.

Purpose

The Edmond J. Safra Foundation Center for Ethics encourages teaching and research about ethical issues in public life and the professions; helps meet the growing need for teachers and scholars who address questions of moral choice in practical ethics and in areas such as architecture, business, education, government, journalism, law, medicine, public health, and public policy; brings together those with competence in philosophical thought and those with experience in professional education; and promotes a perspective on ethics informed by both theory and practice.

Activities

Fellows participate in the weekly seminar of the Center, which discusses problems of teaching and research in ethics. They enjoy access to a wide range of activities in all of the professional schools at Harvard, as well as the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, including opportunities to participate in courses, colloquia, curricular development, collaborative research, study groups, casewriting workshops, and clinical programs. A significant part of their time is devoted to conducting their own research in ethics.

Eligibility

The Faculty Fellowships are open to all regardless of citizenship.
A University committee of Harvard faculty members, representing several of the professional schools and Harvard College, select the Faculty Fellows. Applicants are judged on the quality of their achievements in their field of specialization and their ability to benefit from work in the Center; the contributions they are likely to make in the future in higher education through teaching and writing about ethical issues; and the probable significance of their proposed research and its relevance to the purposes of the Center. Applicants should hold a doctorate in philosophy, political theory, theology or related disciplines; or a graduate degree in one of the professions. Preference will be given to applicants at an early stage of their careers, normally no more than ten years from their first academic appointment.

Stipends and Conditions

Fellows normally receive stipends of up to one-half their academic year salaries (not exceeding a maximum stipend set each fall) for the fellowship period. Their home institution is expected to provide at least half the salary, plus all benefits. Overseas fellows and those without regular academic appointments, or any other source of income, are eligible for stipends depending on individual circumstances. Each fellow is provided with an office, library privileges, and a research allowance. They are expected to devote fulltime to the activities of the Center during the period of the fellowship, September 1 through June 30.

INTRODUCTION

The NOHA European Master's in International Humanitarian Action has been selected by the European Commission among the first Erasmus Mundus masters courses for five years. This implies that the European Commission will grant scholarships to highly qualified third-country graduate students to follow the NOHA Mundus Masters Course, to scholars to carry out teaching and research assignments and scholarly work in the NOHA universities participating in the Course.

Third-country graduate student

Third-country graduate student means a national of a third country other than those from EEA-EFTA States and candidate countries for accession to the European Union;
who has already obtained a first higher education degree;
who is not a resident of any of the Member States or the participating countries (EEA-EFTA States and EU candidate countries for accession);
who has not carried out his or her main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the Member States or the participating countries.

Scholarship

The amount of the student grant is EUR 35, 600. Each scholarship holder will receive EUR 1,600 each month for living costs during the 16 months duration of the program plus a fixed amount of EUR 10,000 to be paid in two instalments of EUR 5,000 each per year.

Third-country students eligible for receiving an Erasmus Mundus scholarship fall into two different categories: one general category in which grantees can come from any third country and one specific category ("Asian windows") in which funds are earmarked for nationals from specific Asian countries.

With regard to the general category NOHA consortium will reserve a 13 to 18 places for third-country students and 3 to 4 places for third-country scholars every year.

With regard to the specific category ("Asian windows") the NOHA consortium will have the possibility to select 8 or 9 additional Asian students every year.

The programs of the Penn Humanities Forum are conceived through yearly topics that invite broad interdisciplinary collaboration. For the 2009–2010 academic year, the theme is Connections. Humanists and those in related fields are invited to submit research proposals on any aspect of this topic, except educational curriculum building and the performing arts.

Fellows teach one undergraduate course each of two terms in addition to conducting their research. The fellowship stipend is $46,500, plus health insurance. Fellows are required to be in residence during their fellowship year (September–May).

Application Guidelines

The Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities at the Penn Humanities Forum, University of Pennsylvania, is open to scholars who are not yet tenured and who are no more than eight years out of their doctorate. Candidates may hold a tenure-track position but may not be tenured either before or during the fellowship year. For the 2009-2010 Fellowship, candidates must have received or will receive their Ph.D. between December 2000 and December 2008. You must have your degree in hand or have passed your defense no later than December 2008 to be eligible. Your application will not be considered unless this condition is met. The Ph.D. is the only terminal degree eligible (i.e., MFAs and other doctorates such as EdD are ineligible).

During their year in residence, Penn Humanities Forum Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows will have the opportunity to pursue their own research. That research must relate to Connections, the Forum's topic of study for 2009–10. Fellows must also participate in the weekly Mellon Research Seminar of the Penn Humanities Forum (Tuesdays, 12:00–2:00), and present their research at one of those seminars.

In addition to conducting their research, Mellon Fellows are required to teach one undergraduate course each term in an appropriate department: a College freshman seminar in the fall semester and an upperclass course in the spring. In writing your course proposal for the fall freshman seminar, please consider carefully the university's description of those seminars (click here for examples of Penn Freshmen Seminar descriptions).

Preference will be given to candidates whose proposals are interdisciplinary, who have not previously used the resources of the University of Pennsylvania, and who would particularly benefit from and contribute to Penn's intellectual life.

Eligibility

The Newton International Fellowship scheme will select the very best early stage post-doctoral researchers from all over the world, and offer support for two years at UK research institutions.

General Description

The long-term aim of the scheme is to build a global pool of research leaders and encourage long-term international collaboration with the UK.
The Newton International Fellowships scheme is run by The British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society.
The Fellowships cover the broad range of natural and social sciences, engineering and the humanities.
They provide grants of £24,000 per annum to cover subsistence and £8,000 to cover research expenses, plus a one-off relocation allowance of £2,000.
As part of the scheme, all Newton Fellows who remain in research will be granted a 10 year follow-up funding package worth £6,000 per annum.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should have completed a PhD and have up to six years’ postdoctoral
experience, or equivalent experience at a comparable level.
Applicants in the final stages of their PhD will be accepted, provided that the PhD will be completed before the start date of the Fellowship. Confirmation of award of the PhD will be required before any Fellowship award is confirmed.
Applicants should be working outside the UK and should not hold UK citizenship at the time of application. Researchers already based in the UK are not eligible to apply.
Contact between the Sponsor and Applicant prior to the application is essential. This contact should lead to a clearly defined and mutually-beneficial research project proposal. Please note that the three implementing academies will not be able to assist in locating a UK Sponsor.

Notes to applicants

Initially a small number of scholarships are on offer from the start of session 2008-09, each for three years.
Research proposals will be expected to contribute to understandings of development issues relevant to the student’s home country.
Normally the student will spend a minimum of 12 months back in-country, for example in the field, in the lab or in archives etc. While conducting research in their home country, students are expected to collaborate with an appropriate local institution (university, research institute, non-governmental organization) with interest in the research topic.
Applicants must supply a statement from an appropriate authority within this home-country institution confirming that local supervisory support will be provided to the applicant whilst in-country undertaking research. It is not intended that the home country institution cover student salary support or research costs, but the statement should confirm that office space and access to email facilities will be made available for the student, and that an appropriate mentor can be identified to act as a point of contact in case of emergency, facilitation of logistics as well as providing any necessary additional research support. This onsite mentor would ideally be recognized as a formal co-supervisor and encouraged to adopt a fundamental role as part of the research team, sharing in research outputs resulting from the work.
Whilst the student is in-country, he/she will receive supervision by email from the UG supervisor, which is to be complemented by onsite support from a designated mentor (or co-supervisor) at the host institution.
Students will be expected to return to their home country on completion of the PhD.
While in the UK the student will receive a monthly stipend at the same level as that paid to graduates supported by UK Research Councils (currently £12,800 per annum). While in their home country they will receive an amount equal to the appropriate standard rate for their level of experience at the collaborating institution.
A bench fee sum of £4000 will be available annually to cover return travel to and from the home country, and as a contribution towards laboratory costs and fieldwork expenses.
Applications will initially be submitted to GCID and an internal committee will make decisions on the successful candidates. At this stage, the successful candidates will be invited to make a formal application to the relevant faculty of the University of Glasgow.
Normally, not more than one scholarship will be assigned to any one of the four GCID research clusters, although if there are no suitable applications for one or more clusters, those scholarships can then be re-assigned.

The PhD scholarship is to be taken up jointly with the appropriate discipline-based department. This would normally be with a department of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, but where appropriate could also be with the Faculty of Law, School of Business or School of Design & Environment at the National University of Singapore.

Interested applicants are required to submit their application to ARI at the address stated below by 15th November 2008, indicating clearly both which ARI interdisciplinary area they wish to join and which department they would be attached to. The following interdisciplinary areas or "clusters" are offering scholarships:

1) The Changing Family in Asia (Research Leader: Prof Gavin Jones)
This cluster explores the dimensions of family change in the region, their causes and their implications. These dimensions include rising ages at marriage, declining size of the nuclear family, increase in one-person households and alternative family forms, changing gender roles within families, and changes in family structures. They are studied in the context of the changing political-economic structures and changing state/family roles in provision of services and support.

2) The Migration Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Brenda Yeoh) explores the issues arising from increased levels of human mobility in the region, both within and across national borders. Mobility of high-level professional and managerial personnel, labour migration, both documented and undocumented, and human trafficking all raise theoretical and methodological questions and major policy issues, as does the role of migration in urban change.

3) The Religion and Globalisation Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Bryan Turner) explores the changing patterns of religious practice, belief and identity in recent times, particularly in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia. The title implies a particular interest in transnational and diasporic interactions, the engagement with modern technologies and values, and new global or ‘glocal’ forms of identity.

4) The Cultural Studies Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Chua Beng Huat) consciously challenges disciplinary boundaries to address new topics, issues and concerns thrown up by the rapid globalization of contemporary cultures. ARI is interested in new understandings of the everyday life cultural practices of contemporary Asia, as in adaptations of older patterns in literature, and the performing and graphic arts, in rapidly changing contemporary conditions.

5) The Southeast Asia-China Interactions Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Anthony Reid) will welcome students in two project areas: The Cold War in Asia, relating particularly to relations between the two Chinas (CCP and KMT) and the parties, movements and governments of Southeast Asia; and issues of heritage recovery and archaeology in Aceh and Sumatra more generally.

6) The Asian Cities Cluster (Research Leaders: Prof Heng Chye Kiang & Prof Chua Beng Huat) is housed in School of Design and Environment (SDE), Department of Architecture (NUS). This cluster focuses especially on cutting-edges areas of rapid change and the identity of Asia cities, notably including: the impact of rapid urbanization, adapting and conserving heritage to a changing urban environment, and urban environmental planning. It will build collaborative and interdisciplinary connections among the colleagues from the Humanities and Social Science faculties in NUS.

ARI is a university-level institute formed in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the NUS. The mission of the Institute is to produce and promote world-class research on Asia. ARI engages the social sciences and humanities broadly defined, and encourages especially multidisciplinary studies. Now home to six research clusters with a strong team of resident and visiting scholars, ARI works closely with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business, Faculty of Law, and School of Design and Environment in NUS.

Scholarships

The Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) is pleased to announce the seventh round of the research fellowship program, Islam in Southeast Asia: View from within. The fellowship grants will be awarded for innovative research on issues concerning economic, socio-political and cultural changes taking place in the diverse Muslim communities of Southeast Asia, especially as they relate to modernization and globalization.

Themes

Islam and Popular Culture: This research theme seeks to understand the various areas of popular culture within Muslim societies. The perspectives and points of view of the so-called common folk is no less important than those of the elite and are expressed in a variety of ways that is collectively referred to as popular culture. There is a need to provide an understanding of the various definitions of popular culture and the debates that have been taking place within Muslim societies on the relationship between Islam and popular culture. This research theme encompasses five aspects of popular culture: popular music, popular literature, popular art, sports and leisure, cuisine, and the new media. Another important consideration is the manner in which Islamic rituals and practices have been influenced by popular culture. Popular culture is a vast area for research. It is expected that researchers will focus on just one or two aspects of popular culture. These dimensions of popular culture also include specifically Islamic activities such as listening to Muslim radio programmes or attendance of the maulid.
Southeast Asian Islam in the World Order: Muslim communities are not immunes to globalization process. New forms of political and economic integration on a global scale and the resulting social transformation have created new opportunities as well as challenges for Muslims in the region. Among these challenges posed by a network of economic, political, military and cultural elite that make up today’s global hegemony . This research theme seeks to analyze global hegemony in terms of its impact on Muslim communities in Southeast Asia, in economic, political and cultural terms and document the varieties of response to global hegemony from the region.
Transnational Muslim ideologies and identity politics lization: For more than thirty years, sociologist, political scientist and journalist, have been concerned with the phenomenon of “Islamic fundamentalism” or “Islamism” because of the predominance of security concerns, the attention has been on the operations of so-called Islamist groups, including those deemed extremist. In these studies, two major issues have been neglected. One is the Muslim-self understanding of extremism. In other words, how do Muslims understand and define extremism? The other neglected issue is the spectrum of contemporary Muslim ideologies that are not extremist. There are sometimes collectively referred to as traditionalist Islam. This research theme explores how Muslim ideologies and identities in Southeast Asia are formed and shaped. The clash of identities within Muslim societies and the ways in which Muslims have been confronting extremism.
Islam and Changing Gender Realities: Rapidly evolving social, cultural and economic processes are leading to unprecedented changes in the societal roles of men and women. Muslim communities in Southeast Asia are being confronted with a diversity of values and lifestyles expressing multiple definitions of gender roles and relationships not always in line with dominant values. This research area encourages researchers to examine how gender roles in both the public and private sphere are changing for Muslims in Southeast Asia and relate those changes to current theological and political debates For example, research can include Muslims who have pushed the glass ceiling (in spite of gender bias) in their endeavors to serve the ummah, whether in historical or contemporary times; also institutions (e.g. family) or movements (e.g. feminism, fundamentalism) that have made change possible or that perpetuate the status quo.
Islam Values, Economic Activities and Social Responsibilities: Studies in this area should examine how Islamic values and institutions can provide alternative economic options to those perceived as condradictory to Qur'anic principles such as riba. Area of focus could include identifying how Islamic economic values work in a modern business environment, analysis of indigenous entrepreneurial models that have been or can be utilized for local level empowerment and/ or studies of the lives of entrepreneurs and the ways Islamic values shape and are re-shaped by their economic activities and social responsibilities.
Confronting Environmental Degradation using Islamic Values: Religious values have a great affect on the relationship between humans and the environment. Now that the world seems to be facing environmental degradation at alarming levels, it has become all the more urgent for Muslims to rethink their theories and perspectives on practices that work towards saving rather than destroying the environment. This in turn requires that Islamic religious principles that have a bearing on the environment are clearly articulated and transformed into policy and programmes. For example, how can debates surrounding halal-haram issues be made more relevant to the environment? How can these issues be brought into Muslim religious education and public discourse so that people are sufficiently conscientized about the ecologically-friendly attitude of Islam. This research theme aims to discuss such issues as well as document on-going attempts in the Muslim world to re-align the sensibilities of Muslims with the environment.

Eligibility

Candidates must be nationals of Southeast Asian countries, hold at least a Bachelor degree and should not be over 40 years of age.
Candidates may work in different sectors including academia, media, and non-governmental organizations. Candidate must be highly motivated to deepen their understanding of Islam in the region.
Women are strongly encouraged to apply.

Fellowship Value

The fellowship consists of an average research grant of $5,000 to cover all research costs for a maximum period of six months in the original country of researcher, and funded participation in mentoring workshops.
The Secretariat will arrange for editing, publication and distribution of the report in a "work in progress" series.

To apply for this fellowship program, candidates need to submit a complete research proposal. Proposed research projects should include sufficient details so that it can be judged for its merit and feasibility.

Program Management

AMAN was established in 1990 with the goal of building understanding and solidarity among Muslims and with other faith communities in Asia towards people's empowerment, human rights, justice and peace. Eligibility for Research Scholarships

Applicants must be university graduates with good honours degree who are seeking admission as a full-time candidate for a higher degree by research of this University. Only candidates with First Class Honours or Second Class (Upper Division) Honours or its equivalent are considered for the award regardless of their citizenship.

The University provides the award of research scholarships to candidates with outstanding academic records to enable them to pursue higher degree studies by research on fulltime basis. No bond is required for the award.

How to Apply

Applications for the awards are opened together with the application for admission. Applicants need only indicate their wish to be considered for the awards in the appropriate section of the Higher Degree Application Form (By Research).

Value of Award

The award is valued between S$29,000 and S$35,000 per year. The award is tenable for one year in the first instance and is renewable subject to good progress. The monthly stipend for Master's & Ph.D. students are S$1,500 and S$2,000 respectively. For students who pass the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination / Confirmation the stipend can be increased to S$2,500, subject to good performance in research and the attainment of required standards for courses taken. In addition to the monthly stipend, the award also provides for the annual research fee and the annual computer fee.

The recipient may not be on paid employment or accept paid employment or hold concurrently any other scholarship, fellowship, bursary or top-up allowance during the prescribed period of the award.

Research Work

The recipient must undertake to carry out research work at this University as directed by the Dean of the School concerned.

Duties

The recipient may be required to assist the School in teaching duties for not more than ten hours a week for which he will be remunerated at such rates as may be determined by the University.

The recipient may also be required to assist the School in academic or administration work not exceeding 10 hours of work per week. There may or may not be any remuneration.

The test centres could also be established at Attock and Gilgit subject to availability of suitable number of candidates and a suitable place to conduct the test. Test score of each candidate counts 40% weightage with 60% weightage of previous academic attainment to qualify for the scholarship.

formal specification of computer algebra software written in statically untyped programming languages for the manipulation of expressions as they are used in the major computer algebra systems today. New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS) are open to all international students who meet the eligibility criteria.
NZIDRS scholarships include:
Full tuition fees for three years of full-time doctoral study
NZ$20,500 per annum living allowance (NZ$1708.33 per month).
up to NZ$600 annual health insurance allowance
NZ$2000 (across 3 year tenure) travel allowance. This is intended to be used for conference attendance and field research

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science invites applications for its short-term invitation fellowship program for research in Japan. This allows researchers employed at designated Japanese research institutions and laboratories to invite fellow researchers from other countries to Japan to participate in discussions, attend seminars, give lectures, or similar. All fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences are eligible.
Fellowships are open to senior scientists, university professors, and others with substantial professional experience. They must be citizens of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. The fellowships last 14 to 60 days. Applications for this program must be submitted to JSPS by a host scientist in Japan through the head of the applicant’s university or institution.

Awards will include round-trip air travel, a daily maintenance allowance of 18,000 yen, domestic research travel allowance of 150,000 yen and a host’s cooperation allowance of 50,000 yen.

Several PhD scholarships are available to work in the group of Professor Cameron Jones, who has recently relocated from Cardiff University to Monash University.
In the past 5 years remarkable progress has been made in the chemistry of low oxidation state and low coordination number p-block compounds. It is now possible to prepare and investigate the fascinating reactivity of such compounds, many of which were thought incapable of existence until a few years ago. Our group is one of the leaders in this field and have made a number of recent landmark advances (see for e.g. J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2006, 128, 2206; Chem. Commun., 2006, 3978; Inorg. Chem., 2007, 46, 11; Dalton Trans., 2006, 3733).

The positions on offer will involve an extension of this work and will see you acquiring many synthetic, spectroscopic and computational skills. The possibility may also exist for you to spend 6 months working in a collaborators laboratory in one of a number of European or North American Universities.
You should have a first or high second class degree in Chemistry (or equivalent qualification). You should be highly motivated, organized and work well in a team. These positions are open to students of all nationalities (including Australian nationals) who are eligible for a visa to study in Australia. The scholarships will include international student fees (if applicable) and a generous stipend.

Scholarship Description
An opportunity for two (2) highly motivated students to take on PhDs in the areas of computer vision, pattern recognition, image processing and signal processing. Both candidates’ research is part of an industry supported project between CSU and Newcrest Mining. CSU shall offer a fee-free place for each successful candidate. The optimal candidate would have a clear interest in computer vision and pattern recognition. In addition, the candidate should demonstrate a willingness to tackle relevant mathematical problems and to work with various software APIs for the hardware used in this project. The candidate should possess or expect to obtain Honours I or strong Honours II degree from disciplines including, but not limited to Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and/or Statistics. The applicants are also expected to have strong programming skills in C++ (or Matlab) and have some system engineering experience.

The Newton International Fellowships

A new multi-million pound initiative to fund research collaborations and improve links between UK and overseas researchers has been launched.
The Newton International Fellowships aim to attract the most promising, early stage, post-doctoral researchers working overseas, who do not hold UK citizenship, in the fields of humanities, engineering, natural and social sciences.
The scheme provides funding to successful candidates for up to 2 years to work with research groups at a UK research Institution and to establish long term international collaborations.
The Fellowships, and the linked alumni association, are an initiative of the UK's leading research academies - the British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society - and Research Councils UK (RCUK).
The funding will be distributed in the form of 50 research fellowships per round of applications. Successful candidates will receive an annual subsistence of £24,000, up to £8,000 for research expenses, and a one-off payment of £2,000 for relocation.
It is hoped that the collaborations and links formed during the course of the fellowship will continue to benefit Newton Fellows throughout their careers. To facilitate this, former Fellows will be eligible for follow-on funding of up to £6,000 per year, for up to ten years, to help develop lasting international networks with the UK.
Former Newton Fellows will also become members of the UK International Fellowship Association managed by RCUK, which aims to build a network of overseas researchers, help them maintain contact with the UK and provide networking opportunities to encourage new collaborations.
